Elcogen, a leading European solid oxide fuel cell manufacturer headquartered in Estonia, is pleased to announce that Convion, a system integrator from Finland, is ready to commercialise its C60 fuel cell system, following a successful field installation.
Incorporating Elcogen’s next generation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and stack technology, the system plays an integral role in a smart micro-grid in Lempäälä Energia’s LEMENE Energy Community Project, providing clean, resilient and uninterrupted energy.
Completed in 2019, the LEMENE project has demonstrated the capability to decarbonise Europe’s energy markets and has been highlighted by the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (MEAE) as a solution to meet European Union 2030 climate and energy targets.
Elcogen’s world-leading fuel cell technology is widely considered to be one of the most promising solutions to the global challenge to find reliable alternative fuel sources. Following the C60 system’s success and proven efficiency, there is now a unique opportunity to bring this market-leading technology to customers.
The C60 fuel cell system produces electricity at 60 kW and heat at approximately 25 kW. Additionally, electricity production efficiency is 60 per cent, the best available in its market category, and the system has achieved 99 per cent availability in a 7,000-hour test run.
Alongside providing highly efficient and dependable power generation, emissions of NOx, SOx, PM, VOC or noise are non-existent, waste heat recovery is 80 per cent of total efficiency, and the system is able to produce high voltage DC power with direct integration to energy storage systems.
Enn Õunpuu, founder and CEO of Elcogen, said: “We are delighted to hear of Convion’s successful deployment of its C60 fuel cell system, as part of the LEMENE Energy Community Project, and we are immensely proud of the important role that Elcogen played.
“As environmental considerations and economic factors converge, and the demand for clean and reliable energy continues to increase, there is enormous potential for Elcogen’s pioneering technology to be used across a range of power generation systems.
“We are in an excellent position to capture growth and generate value for investors, and we are excited to enable more homes, businesses and transport systems to be powered by clean, efficient and reliable energy.”
Erkko Fontell, CEO of Convion, commented: “LEMENE is a valuable reference to us. It represents a direction in which the entire energy system is going, that is, smartly controlled distributed systems that combine different technologies.”
