Solid oxide electrolysis cells

We provide mass manufactured planar, Solid Oxide electrode-supported Cells (SOC) operating at 600-800 °C. Elcogen cells are the market’s most efficient solid oxide technology, suitable for electrolysis (SOEC), co-electrolysis (co-SOEC) and reversible (rSOC) operation modes.

Cells can be incorporated into third party stacks for commercial applications, including heat and power generation, green hydrogen production, renewable energy storage, industrial process gas, and production of synthetic fuels and chemicals. The low cell operating temperature enables longer lifetimes and the use of low cost materials at stack and system level.

Quality assurance of solid oxide cells

Elcogen’s cells meet the highest quality standard on the market. Elcogen’s cell technology development and cell production are certified and meets ISO 9001:2015; ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 management standard. We have developed an internal multi-step cell quality assurance procedure that enables us to trace each cell throughout the production process from its origin on material level to ready-to-ship product.

Production capacity

Starting from 2024 Elcogen’s cell production capacity target is around one million cells per year and increasing every year. Starting from 2030 our target is provide GW-scale production capacity of solid oxide fuel and electrolysis cells. Our flexible cell production capability enables us to produce small quantities of cells for validation, testing and demo projects and larger volumes needed for commercial projects.

Ready for commercialisation

Elcogen’s SOEC cells are mass manufactured and ready for commercialisation. Cells can be incorporated into third party stacks for commercial applications. We currently supply more than 40 commercial customers globally.

Benefits of Elcogen cells

Low temperature means better economics

High temperatures speed up corrosion and degradation of cell components over time, so reducing operating temperature is crucial to slowing down these processes and increasing lifetime. Elcogen cells operate at one of the lowest temperatures available in the market, starting from 600°C. This allows Elcogen and its customers to use low-cost materials on stack and system levels, while delivering longer system lifetimes without compromising the performance.

Best efficiency on the market

Elcogen cells are the market’s most efficient solid oxide electrolysis technology (SOEC), with below 3kWh/Nm3 of specific energy consumption for hydrogen production while able to operate efficiently already at a temperature of 650-700°C vs. 750-900°C industry average. The cells are suitable for electrolysis, co-electrolysis (co-SOEC) and reversible (rSOC) operation modes.

Reversibility (rSOC) generates fuel from power and power from fuel Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology enables production of electricity and heat from a variety of fuels. When used in reversible mode, electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode, the same device can convert electricity and heat into hydrogen or other valuable fuels and chemicals that can be stored as energy or fuel, or be used by industry for various purposes. Reversibility (rSOC) also has the potential to be utilised as an energy storage solution to address intermittent daily, weekly and seasonal energy generation.

Reversibility of SOEC/SOFC is seen as a strong disruptive innovation, that can enable a dramatic CAPEX reduction in a power-to-power chain, as only one asset is needed, instead of the two required in a standard power-to-X-to-power chain (electrolyser and fuel cell systems). In addition, the technology operates 100% of the time, maximising the return on investment.
